Since 1990, the Davies Charitable Foundation has contributed over $11.5 million to philanthropic and charitable endeavours in the Kingston, Ontario region.
The Davies Charitable Foundation provides funding to registered charitable organizations in the Kingston, Ontario region.
Semi-annual competitions for charitable funding are held each year in the winter and fall. The competitions entertain applications from eligible charitable organizations in the Kingston area to support specific projects in the arts, athletics, education, the environment, health, and social services.
Since 1990, the Davies Charitable Foundation has contributed over $11.5 million to philanthropic and charitable endeavours in the Kingston, Ontario region.
Through healthcare specialists and highly trained volunteers, Nankind (Nanny Angel Network) provides a free counselling and bereavement program to children and families whose mother or father has cancer, is in palliative care or has passed away. Nankind was the successful recipient of $25,000 in funding through the Foundation’s 2024 Winter Gift Competition toward the delivery of programs.
There are approximately 10,461 people in KFL&A who identify as having a seeing disability. The Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) was the successful recipient of a $7,500 grant in the 2023 Fall Gift Competition to support the Vision Mates Program in Kingston.
The Foundation recognizes the integral service Martha's Table Community Program provides to unhoused people. In 2022 Martha's Table Community Program served 145,000 meals through takeout and door-to-door delivery. Martha's Table was the successful recipient of $68,000 in funding through the Foundation's 2023 Winter Gift Competition to support the expansion of food services.
Each year the Foundation holds two competitions for funding, the Winter and Fall Gift Competition.
The Winter Gift Competition is held in the first quarter of the year. Subject to available funds, applications for funding between $25,000 and $100,000 are considered. The Winter Gift Competition is designed to support larger scale capital projects and initiatives which will have a long lasting impact in our community.
The Fall Gift Competition is held in the fall season between September and October. Subject to available funds, applications for funding up to $7,500 are considered. This competition is designed to support smaller scale initiatives which can still have a tremendous impact in our community.
For 65 years, the Davies Family owned and operated the Kingston Whig-Standard, Canada’s oldest continuously published daily newspaper. Following in his grandfather Rupert’s and father Arthur’s footsteps, Michael Davies became Publisher in 1969 and sole owner of the newspaper in 1976. With the sale of the newspaper in 1990, Michael and his wife, Elaine, established the Davies Charitable Foundation to continue and expand their philanthropy in the Kingston, Ontario region.
